About the book
The week her youngest leaves for college, Rachel Morgan is fifty-one, newly separated after twenty-eight years of marriage, and alone in a house in the Cincinnati suburbs that has suddenly gone very quiet.
Clearing out the room over the garage, she opens a box she packed at twenty-one. Inside are the measured drawings she made as an architecture student, the drafting tools her hands still remember, and an acceptance letter to a fellowship in Charleston, which she deferred and then never answered.
No one hid it. No one stood in her way. Her husband had told her Charleston wasn’t that far. She simply put it in a folder and told herself she’d do it later. Later became twenty-nine years.
Now Rachel enrolls in a historic preservation program, back in a classroom with carpenters, retirees, and twenty-four-year-olds who are fluent in software she’s never seen. Her class is given a real building to save: a crumbling 1889 Turner hall in one of the city’s oldest neighborhoods, with five great wooden trusses, a bowling alley under the plywood, and a neighborhood that has been waiting fifty years to go back upstairs.
Meanwhile her grown children aren’t sure what to make of a mother with plans. Her marriage, which was real and is over, still has a few honest conversations left in it. And Daniel, a friend from her college studio who has lived a whole complicated life of his own, becomes part of the life she is building, but never the reason for it.
The Life She Put Away is a warm, intelligent novel about deferred ambition, mature friendship, later-in-life love, and the courage to begin again without pretending the past didn’t matter. For readers who know that a second act isn’t a do-over. It’s a choice.
