About the book
For thirty years, Claire Bennett was the agreeable one. She agreed to leave her job, agreed to the sensible plan, and agreed to every reasonable thing laid out on the kitchen island. Now the marriage is over, the house in Ohio is under contract, and her aunt June has left her a weathered Cape above a working harbor in Port Haven, Maine.
There’s a cash offer on the table and a deadline on Labor Day. There’s also a boatyard at the bottom of the lot that has used June’s ramp for nearly six decades, and the buyers want it gone. The yard belongs to Ethan Cole, the boy Claire loved the summer she was nineteen and hasn’t seen since. He isn’t signing anything, because his own sale and a young family’s future depend on that strip of gravel.
As Claire works through June’s ledgers, a roof she knows how to price, and a town that has already decided what kind of woman she is, the past keeps opening. There’s a mortgage her mother never mentioned, and a phone call nobody told her about. And there’s an aunt everyone called stuck, who turns out to have lived exactly the life she chose.
Claire has to decide, for herself this time, what the house is for and what she wants.
What June Kept is a warm, grown-up love story about starting over in your fifties. It’s about a small harbor town, a family secret with no villains, and a woman who finally decides for herself what to keep.
